“With support from the Ministry of Health, the North Shore Health Department and the Kiwanis, an innovative design concept was developed which departed from typical narrow double loaded resident room wings to that of defined homes, each with their own living and dining room, activity rooms, fireplace lounges, bathing facilities and nursing care centres.”
“The work was carried out with a high degree of skill and professionalism and the resulting facility is all we hoped for and more. I am certain that the residents will be as pleased with the results as we are.” – Arwin Weseen, Board Chairman, Kiwanis Care Centre
Located on a 4.1-acre irregular shaped site, it is bounded by Mount Seymour Parkway to the north, Berkley Road to the east and single family residential lots to the south. It is part of the Maplewood community, intended to become an urban village with a mix of commercial, multi-family residential and institutional uses.
The resident homes are arranged in two H-shapes located on either side of the circulation spine. This arrangement provides a variety of outdoor spaces for the residents and allows for secure external courtyards. Access to these courtyards and gardens are typically through the common amenity rooms.
The massing of the concrete and steel building is broken down into 2-storey and 3-storey components. The residential character of the project is reinforced through the use of steeply sloping roofs, articulated massing, bay windows, residential architectural detailing and extensive landscaping.
