Our goal was to give a measure of dignity and elegance to a modest community centre and to elevate this small building into a symbolic beacon, a rallying point for the community, in reaffirming its pride and identity.

“This project not only involved acts to reconstruct and repair the community’s relationship to the centre, but the building’s relationship to the street and the neighbourhood. We are delighted with the transformation of this facility into a spacious, light filled and accommodating community centre that meets the changing needs of the community.” – Thunderbird Community Association

The 4,750 sq.ft. expansion is comprised of a multi-purpose space for community events, a small lounge, a meeting room, a staff office, washrooms and an outdoor balcony. The multi-purpose room, a fourteen foot high volume, is focused to the north with a large glazed end wall and linear balcony stretching across the full width of the room to capitalize on the spectacular mountain views. The balcony is suspended by steel rods which hang from wooden roof beams above. The small lounge and kitchenette located adjacent to the multipurpose room functions as a servery for larger events as well as a separate meeting room at other times.
