The Jewish Home for the Aged of B.C. engaged NSDA to design an integrated seniors’ community offering assisted living and complex care, located at West 41st Avenue and Osler Street.
The complex care beds on the main level are connected to the existing care home by a glazed link, with a large landscaped courtyard in between, providing a safe and secure outdoor area for the elderly residents. The assisted living residences are located on the upper floors, with amenity areas on the main level. The amenities include a fireside lounge, common dining room, library, activity games room, beauty salon, a wellness centre, and a private dining room for family gatherings.
The project was carefully designed to fit into the single-family neighbourhood. The building steps from three storey to two storey at each end to reduce the overall massing and articulated in plan to retain mature trees. On the exterior the residential expression is reinforced through the use of sloping roofs with hip dormers, bay windows, horizontal siding with painted wood trims, chimney elements and the use of residential detailing.
