“This project represents a significant enhancement to seniors’ care in Oceanside,” said VIHA board chair Jac Kreut. “This new facility creates new residential care beds in a modern, resident-focused care environment, replacing the old, outdated beds at Arranglen Gardens.

“Qualicum Beach residents now have more options available in their community to support their long-term needs,” said Health Minister George Abbott. “These new residential care beds and assisted living units are part of a campus of care, a unique model that allows people to stay in the same location even as their care needs change over time.”

The Gardens at Qualicum Beach is an integrated seniors’ housing and care project located on a 4.3 acre site bounded by Berwick Road and Village Way in the town of Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island. The Gardens offers four types of seniors accommodation: 39 strata condominiums, 62 independent living apartments, 30 assisted living suites and 96 complex care beds.

To reduce the overall massing and to maximize privacy and views for the units, the 4-storey project is configured in plan as a pinwheel form with four wings radiating outward from a central hub. The building configuration provides separate “front door” entrances for the complex care and the independent strata residences.

The common amenities for the residents located in the central hub include fireside lounges, dining rooms, games and media centre, library, tea room, crafts activity area, a private dining area for family gatherings and parties, a community meeting room, a wellness centre and spa, and easily accessible large patios that overlook the landscaped gardens and water ponds.
